Fanfiction Contest: Entry Open!
by Katie (hontowa)
at March 23rd, 2009 (09:50 am)

Interest in this is still a little sluggish, so I'm going to change things up a bit. I'm making the drabbles and short stories two separate contests, but you can still enter both if you like - I'm staggering them so you should have plenty of time!

There are now two separate parts to this contest: A Drabble Contest and A Short Story Contest. You can choose which to enter, or enter both!

Drabble Contest

1. Choose 3 prompts from here. Any 3 are fine, as long as they're not your own!

2. Write 3 separate drabbles. Obviously keep these short, but don't make them just one sentence.

3. When you're done, send me a PM on LJ. You can either upload your drabbles in a word file and give me a link, or ask me for my email address and send it as an attachment. Do not reveal your identity to anyone but me until after the voting is over!

Deadline: April 23rd

Short Story Contest

1. Choose 1 prompt from here. Any prompt is fine, as long as it's not your own!

2. Write 1 short story. The minimum length: 1 page in word, 12-point font. Maximum length: up to you.

3. When you're done, send me a PM on LJ. You can either upload your story in a word file and give me a link, or ask me for my email address and send it as an attachment. Do not reveal your identity to anyone but me until after the voting is over!

Deadline: May 23rd

Edit: A good point was brought up - some of these prompts might get used multiple times. I don't want to prevent people from writing the same prompt, as two writers might take the same prompt completely differently. When someone submits an entry using a prompt, I will add it to the used prompt list below. That way each writer can decide on their own if they want to use a prompt someone else has or not.

Used Prompt List
Prompts used for drabbles have been removed since that part of the contest is over.
- Summer, a crowded train. On the ride home, Ohno is pressed against a slight boy around his age.
- Magic tricks and fish stories
- Ohno and Nino (not yet in relationship) stuck in elevator for hours

Even if you don't want to enter the contest, feel free to use any of the prompts to write any story you want :)

[arashi] ohno ~ toothbrush

Yay, I'm excited for this! I've never written RPS, but I might actually participate. :3

Should there be a list of what prompts are taken? There are so many good prompts here, and while I'd love to read everyone's different takes on stories, it'd be a little difficult if all of the entries were based on the same few prompts.

So maybe a master list that you cross out as people "claim" prompts by PMing you? If not, this way will work just as well, I think. I'd just hate to see some prompts get left behind while others get overwritten.

Aaah, good point. I don't necessarily want to cross out prompts, because some of them can be taken different ways. Personally, I tried to write mine so that some of them could be angsty, comedy, or fluffy all depending on the author's take. I also don't want someone to claim a prompt, and then never end up submitting an entry.

But like you said, I'd hate to have the same prompt used over and over. What I'll do is have a list of which prompts have been actually used, but I won't make a rule that other people can't use that one. That way, it's up to the author. They can decide if they think their take will be unique or if they'd rather choose another.

"Do not reveal your identity to anyone but me until after the voting is over!"

When I want to enter, I need someone to Beta-read my fanfiction first, would this be an exception to this rule?

Do you have a regular beta that you use? As long as the person doesn't vote in the contest, then it's fine if just one person knows. I just don't want people to post here in the thread and say "I'm writing about this" because then the voting could be biased.

No, I dont have a regular beta who I am not sure they wont vote, but I am sure I can finde someone who can Beta it for me and who isnt in the Arashi-fandom, so wouldnt vote

yeah, I understand the problem whit this, thats why I asked
but English ist not my first Language and I think I still make to many mistakes

I understand, and I'm definately not discouraging you from having a beta :) As long as none of the people voting can tell which fic is yours, it's perfectly fine to have a beta :)

Oh, retard edit: I may just have missed it, but is it possible to submit more than one time in each category if so desired?

Just one entry per person per category. So only three drabbles for the first, and one short story for the second. :)

..so basically, write it whenever, and pm it to you by the deadline? there's no sort of 'official sign up', so to speak? because that makes it convenient if i never finish :') totally going to try out the drabbles, and maybe if i have time, the short story.

Posted by: Katie (hontowa)
Posted at: March 24th, 2009 01:37 pm (UTC)

Yup. There's no real point of a sign up, because it just pressures people to feel like they have to decide right now if they're going to be able to get entries in and then I think less people would participate. If you have time to participate, great!

Such wonderful prompts (I'm really bad at proposing prompts, sorry! XD)! Yes! I'm going to try at least in the drabbles contest! ^___^

I'm going to join! Sorry, I'm not good with prompts, it turns into something else. :D I want to be part of the short story con~! <3
I just wonder how I can manage 4 stories at one time... XD I'll do my best, please allow me to partake.

Another question! What would you say the maximum word length of a drabble is? Like, where's the threshold between drabble and short fic?

Posted by: Katie (hontowa)
Posted at: March 30th, 2009 02:05 pm (UTC)

Well the minimum length for the short-fic was 1 page, but usually a drabble is much shorter than that. It's kind of hard to give an exact word/page count, because there's so many different lengths that qualify as drabbles. I went through the memories of the community and compiled some examples of good length drabbles, so hopefully this helps:

example 1
example 2
example 3
example 4

Hopefully those clear it up? Otherwise, a good way to distinguish a drabble from a short story is the contents. A drabble usually only captures a brief moment, exchange, or thought, while a short story has more of a beginning-middle-end structure. I think if you follow that, I think the length should naturally fall into place.

Okay, that's what I thought. I usually aim for 100 (the "official" drabble length), but something I wrote ended up being too long for a drabble and too short for a short story. Gah. XD

Thanks for the examples, too. It gave me more ways to procrastinate, heh.
